The Royal Hotel at Heysham has won Lunesdale Campaign for Real Ale’s Winter Pub of the Year Award.

The award is given four times a year and is given to pubs which achieve the highest standards in serving real ale. The Royal, which normally serves four real ales at any one time, will now go forward into the competition for CAMRA Pub of the Year.

Cliff Laine, Lunesdale CAMRA chairman presented the award to Joanne McAulay and Chris Smith on Friday. The award recognises the efforts of Joanne and Chris in looking after a range of beers, many which are locally produced, together with providing a warm welcome that appeals to all age groups.

“It's good to have your hard work acknowledged,” said Joanne, “and we hope that people will be encouraged to come and have a look at what we are doing here in Heysham Village.”

It is the first time a Mitchells managed house has won this award and Mitchells joint Managing Director Jonathan Barker commented that “It is always rewarding to receive a CAMRA award.”
