Go-ahead local wins coveted award

The George & Dragon, which overlooks the River Lune on Lancaster’s quayside, has won a prestigious award from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) for the remarkable achievements of the couple who run it.

The Most Improved Pub Award (MIPA) is given by Lunesdale Branch of CAMRA to pubs that have demonstrated dramatic improvements in areas such as facilities, drinking environment, atmosphere, and quality and variety of ales served.

Presenting the certificate to Ian and Kye Lloyd, CAMRA branch Chair Jenny Greenhalgh spoke of the transformation that had taken place. “You have made a permanent difference. The George now offers good company, a lively community atmosphere and great beer. We could do with more places like this one.”

Kye, who has run the pub for the past eighteen months with partner Ian, said the secret of success is keeping in touch with the clientele. “We talk regularly to customers to see what they want — which is fine cask ales and good food. And if someone wants a particular beer we do our best to put it on.”

The award was presented at a special event at the George attended by regulars, CAMRA members and representatives from the pub company Admiral Taverns.
