Hike & Pint, Hest Bank – Kellet

'hikers' waiting for the Hest Bank to open

Five hikers took part in this canal walk on a cloudy day, four walking from the White Cross, I joined the hikers waiting for the Hest Bank to open at noon, having taken a different route. The Hest Bank was quiet, but plenty of staff were waiting for the lunchtime and afternoon rush.. Adnams Jester was the main beer sampled, along with Black Sheep. Returning to the canal, and continuing to the Blue Anchor in Bolton-le-Sands, another quiet pub except for the Monaco Grand Prix on the TV. The recent upgrade has left a continental café style, with teas, coffees and snacks menu available from 9am each day. Lancaster Amber & Red, along with Bluebird was sampled. We walked through the village, passing the former Packet Boat, looking unchanged except the inn signs having been removed. Rejoining the canal, entering the Royal by the back door entrance. The pub was packed with drinkers and diners, the food looked very tasty. Three third pints were available, and there was a nice choice of beers, Coniston Astra and Oakham Citra & JHB were among those tasted. I left the party here, to return home to watch Preston North End win the Division One Play-Off final on TV. The rest of the party debated whether to continue to Carnforth or hike over to the Limeburners in Nether Kellet. The latter was chosen and we had very acceptable pints of Cross Bay Omega before calling it a day.
